Final Outcome Development | Weave
After taking part in the initial workshop a couple of weeks ago, I really enjoyed the process of making a weave and building up my own fabric through different yarns and threads.
Since the possibilities for colour combinations is endless when it comes to weave and we are fortunate enough to be able to take advantage of fantastic facilities, I really wanted to try my hand at weave again and create some pieces that could potentially feature in my final outcome.
I was really happy with my sample I created in the first workshop and was impressed at how colourful and vivid it turned out, so I thought incorporating weave into my final outcome would be a fantastic way of mimicking the colours of the markets, from the plethora of fruit and veg, to the reams of beautiful fabrics on sale!
My idea for my first piece was the colours of a watermelon, so I chose green, red and black threads accordingly to interpret my weave this way. Although I'm happy I went ahead and experimented with this idea, I don't think my first sample went well, possibly due to the base colours of the weft showing through more than I'd like and creating a striped pattern rather than a checked one I was hoping for. After I'd realised my first sample was a bit of a flop, I used the opportunity to experiment with different ways I could manipulate the warp and weft to create different patterns.
I won't be using this particular sample in my final outcome but it was a learning curve and I'm still happy I produced it.
I went ahead and decided to create another sample, this time with colours based on the tones in blueberries. Additionally this time, I chose a loom with different weft threads that were closer to the colours I was going to use on the weft, and what would guarantee me the checked pattern I was missing the first time.
I'm much happier with this sample as I think the check of the warp and weft makes all the difference and the colours work well together to resemble those of blueberries. I'd be open to using this in my final outcome - although I haven't yet decided how - or potentially handing it in as a solo outcome.
Since my blueberry inspired sample went the way I was hoping for, I thought I'd have one more go and this time chose colours inspired by the brightly adorned fabric stalls from the markets. I chose bright and luxurious looking yarns, some with added metallic threads, which I think compliment the colours of the market fabrics perfectly and as a weave sample I think work really well.
Again, I'm looking to add this sample to my final outcome but if not I'd love to hand this in alongside my blueberry themed piece as a little fabric book alongside my final outcome.
